Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)
Travel requirements to the UK are changing. This includes moving from physical immigration documents to eVisas and introducing Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA); a digital permission to travel.
From 8 January 2025, non-EU residents will be required to have an ETA, with EU residents also requiring an ETA from 2 April 2025 for stays less than six months. As of 9 April 2025, it will cost £16 to apply for an ETA.
If you hold a UK visa and use a biometric residence permit (BRP) or card (BRC) to prove your immigration status, access your eVisa before you travel at gov.uk/eVisa. If you already have an eVisa, make sure your travel document is registered to your gov.uk account.
If you do not need a visa to visit the UK for short stays of up to six months, you will need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). Check when you need an ETA to travel to the UK and apply at gov.uk/electronic-travel-authorisation.
British and Irish passport holders will not need an ETA.
The fastest way to apply is using the ETA app which can be downloaded below.

Latest Update:
From 25 February, UKBF will enforce ETA compliance for non-UK nationals.
Those who do not have an ETA will be unable to board their transport and will not be permitted to travel to the UK.
This includes HGV drivers who don't need a UK visa but also have no UK immigration status.
Please note: ETAs reset when passports are renewed. For example, if a driver has been coming to UK over last few months with a valid ETA but has since renewed their passport, they will need a new ETA.
